Pay It Forward | 5 Things You Can Do Starting Right Now to Change (Pt 3)

When was the last time you did something to help another person without expecting anything at all in return?

Most people simply don’t.

Altruism is rare these days, and frankly, the world needs more of it! In fact, YOU need more of it!

Yep, studies show that simple acts of kindness, such as giving a homeless person your leftovers from dinner at the stoplight on the way home from a restaurant, releases serotonin and oxytocin. Serotonin, as you may be aware, is a hormone that makes you feel good. And oxytocin, which you probably aren’t familiar with, increases feelings of trust and love. Remember how you felt when you first started dating your wife/husband/partner? That feeling.

Why help others?

Believe it or not, when you really take a look at your life, most of your problems are total bullshit. As long as you have food, shelter, people who love you, and the means to survive, you’re gonna be ok.

It really doesn’t matter that you failed that test. Or Starbucks didn’t have your pumpkin spice latte. Or that your free movie pass had expired. Or that your house needs painting. Nope, none of it really matters.

I promise you, there are many people out there with real problems. The homeless vet suffering from PTSD. The woman who left her husband because he beat her. The kid who comes from a broken home and his mom works 3 jobs just so that her family can have an apartment to stay in, at least for now. The kid who’s parents died in a car accident. Those with mental illness. Those who are destitute. Those who go hungry.

These are people that need your help. They simply may want someone to talk with. They may need a hot meal. They might need just a bit more support.

Pay it forward. Do something nice for someone else. You’ll feel great too.
